Not Machine Made (btw)
Not Machine Made (btw) is my final year univeristy project I produced surrounding the ideologies of South African & Zulu craft culture, a culture I fondly grew up with in my hometown of Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal on the north coast of South Africa.
The book surrounds themes of handmade craft culture. In a world full of machines that produce mass made souvenirs, many South Africans are masters of their crafts, producing a large amount of the countries souvenirs using natural materials & their own hands.
All the illustrations are handmade lino prints, each showcasing popular objects that are made as a result of this crafting culture. The writing is in Zulu, the local language of the area that I grew up in. Postcards can be seen too, which were sold at my final exhibition to encourage other artists & crafters to use their skills in order to make a livelihood.
